Grants of £150 to help disabled people with energy bills, food and essentials
Do you know or support somebody who has a learning disability or autism and lives in Bexley?
Could they benefit from a £150 grant to help them if they are struggling to afford energy and water bills, food, and other wider related essentials?
The Household Support Grant is a national grant, funded by the Department for Work and Pensions, that aims to support people most in need of help with the rising cost of living. The London Borough of Bexley has asked Bexley Mencap, to administer the grant to support people with a learning disability and/or autism.
This grant is available until the end of September 2024 and is not means tested.
Who can apply for a grant
A grant can be given to people who:
- Are a Bexley resident
- Are aged 16 or over
- Are in financial hardship
- Have a learning disability and/or autism
- Do not have access to any other funds to help with their financial difficulties, such as other sources of cost of living support e.g. energy bills support scheme, cost of living payments, not considered eligible for public funds etc.
Household Support Fund grants cannot be used for:
- Council Tax help
- Paying mortgages or personal debts
- Households judged to have sufficient income or savings
How to apply for a grant
People cannot apply directly for a grant.
A quick online form needs to be completed on a person’s behalf by an “endorser”. An endorser is a professional who knows them and can say that they would benefit from this grant. This could be, but is not limited to:
- a social worker
- a GP
- a care or support worker
- a charity worker
- a library worker
- Somebody from a local organisation or activity group that they attend regularly
The “endorser” needs to email Bexley Mencap on householdgrants@bexleymencap.org.uk to request a form that asks for some basic information including the person’s bank details so we can transfer the grant directly to them. Once we are certain the payment is complete, we delete their bank details from our records.
Each person can only be awarded one grant in this round.
